Taking place during National Brain Awareness Week (16–22 March), the campaign shines a spotlight on the vital role of neurology nurse specialists in supporting people living with neurological conditions across Ireland.
Specialist neurology nurses are central to the delivery of high-quality neurological care. They provide advanced clinical expertise, empower and educate patients, and play a crucial role in improving outcomes for people living with neurological conditions. There specialist knowledge is vital in managing some of the long – term neurological disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and dystonia.
These nurses are uniquely trained to recognise subtle changes in a patient’s neurological status — often identifying early warning signs before they escalate into life‑threatening emergencies. They frequently serve as the primary point of contact for patients and families, coordinating care across multidisciplinary teams and ensuring seamless support from hospital to community settings.
Evidence shows that neurology nurse specialists can reduce consultant outpatient workload by up to 40% and cut hospital readmission rates by as much as 50% through timely intervention and expert, continuous care.
With more than 860,000 people in Ireland living with neurological conditions, these specialist nurses play a vital role at every stage—from diagnosis through long‑term management. They provide a trusted point of continuity, advocacy, and expertise for individuals navigating complex and often lifelong neurological challenges.
